Since the days of the ancient Greeks, hot springs have been known to provide vast health benefits.

Pamukkale in Denizli, Turkey The hot springs of Pamukkale, located in southwestern Turkey, are thousands of years old. The 17 cascading waterfalls flow into one another to create a panorama of gleaming white terraces formed by the calcium that cools on the hillside. This white limestone is known as travertine. And when you see it for yourself, the name Pamukkale – literally translated as “cotton castle” – makes so much sense. Next door, you can soak in the Sacred Pool, floating in crystal clear yet lusciously warm waters amidst ruins of Greek and Roman columns.Take a peek at this otherworldly natural site.

 

Caldeira Velha Hot Springs in São Miguel, Azores


The Caldeira Velha Hot Springs, on the island of São Miguel in the Azores – Portuguese islands in the North Atlantic halfway between North America and Europe – are located amidst a beautifully lush natural environment of massive ferns and towering trees. The three active volcanoes on the island serve as the heat source for the hot springs. The nearby town of Furnas is filled with quaint, picturesque buildings and narrow streets, a great place to discover and stay at while visiting the hot springs.

 

Blue Lagoon in Grindavík, Iceland The Blue Lagoon is located just a 45-minute drive from Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik. The sparkling blue water ponds are dotted with black lava rocks and surrounded by waterfalls, bridges and even a bar. The mineral salts in the water are very soothing and rejuvenating. Visitors to the lagoon are encouraged to soak, swim, and enjoy the magnificent views as well as to partake in the ritual of cleansing one’s face with a silica mud mask.

 

Ma'in Hot Springs in Amman, Jordan


A short drive from Amman is the Biblical site of Hammamat Ma'in, a series of natural hot springs where it is believed that Herod the Great, King of Judea escaped to bathe in the healing waters. The springs are located 866 feet below sea level, surrounded by the steep mountains of Mount Nebo. The area includes several waterfalls, mineral pools and lush resting areas for visitors to enjoy. The healing properties of these hot springs are legendary. In fact, many European doctors prescribe a visit here as part of the recovery regimen for curing skin diseases, arthritis, respiratory, colon and even bone illnesses.
